Specials Class Racing Scooters
Specials Class racing motorscooters are those which have been modified to gain a performance edge. Installing a larger carb or exhaust, porting, cutting down body panels, all of these will get you tossed from the Stock class, and will put you in Specials. I think Specials is easier to qualify for, because as long as it's a scooter, anything goes.

This example of a Specials Class racing scooter is based on a Smallframe Vespa, but is too heavily modified to run in anything but Specials.

Note the cut-down frame and legshields, the dropped handlebar, the implanted frame stiffener, and the repositioned footpegs.

It's owned and ridden by Scott Smallwood, of Supersonic Scooters, out of Columbus, Ohio.

Another good example of a Specials Class racing scooter is this Lambretta-based machine. It's owned and ridden by Joe Kokesh, of the Hard Luck Racing Team, out of Saint Louis, Missouri.

Note that the Lambretta frame has been replaced with a tubular unit. This is allowed because it maintains the engine and suspension layout of the original scooter. Also visible are the racing intake and exhaust systems and the relocated fuel tank and footrests. Above is the custom hydraulic front disc brake.
